PURITY & MULTIPLICITY

(PROJECT DESCRIPTION)

This publication is an exploration of purity — both in design and in culture. Purity is praised in some areas, while completely disregarded in others. This publication delves into the contrast between Massimo Vignelli’s advocacy for the modernist view of simplicity and purity in design, represented by his belief in pure materials and typography, and the postmodernism movement that rebels against these notions and embraces complexity, and multiplicity, rejecting singular truths. Through this juxtaposition, this publication will examine the intricate notion of purity, not only in the design environment but in the cultural world as well, such as purity culture. This publication examines and questions the concept of purity, and the pursuit of purity, and contemplates the liberation found in embracing plurality and complexity.
